How to Prevent Your Eyes from Tiring

January 13, 2023

We all know how it feels when our eyes feel tired. It’s a common problem, especially if you spend a lot of time staring at electronic screens. Whether you’re working on a computer, playing video games, or scrolling through your social media feed, it’s easy to overdo it and strain your eyes.

If you find yourself constantly rubbing your eyes or squinting, you may be putting your vision at risk. While it’s normal to experience some eye fatigue throughout the day, if this is a persistent problem, it could lead to more serious issues like dry eye syndrome or even permanent vision damage.

Luckily, there are some simple things you can do to prevent eye fatigue and keep your vision healthy.

1.    Take Breaks Often

When you’re focused on something, it can be hard to remember to take breaks, but it’s important for preventing eye fatigue. Every 20 minutes or so, look away from whatever you’re staring at for at least 20 seconds and give your eyes a rest. Blink slowly and deliberately several times before looking back at what you were doing.

2.    Adjust Your Lighting

If possible, adjust the lighting in your environment, so it isn’t too bright or too dim. Too much light can strain your eyes just as much as too little light can, causing them to work harder than necessary, which leads to fatigue more quickly.

3.    Use Artificial Tears

If your eyes feel dry or irritated after staring at electronic screens for hours, try using artificial tears, which are available over the counter. This will help lubricate your eyes and reduce discomfort.

4.    Limit Your Screen Time

One of the best ways to prevent eye strain is to cut down on how long you spend looking at screens each day. This can be a challenge in this day and age, since smartphones, tablets, computers, and TV screens have become ubiquitous in our lives. If possible, try not to get sucked into spending hours online or in front of the television.

5.    Schedule A Comprehensive Eye Exam

Many people don’t realize it, but one of the best ways you can protect your vision is with regular comprehensive eye exams with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. These professionals can detect early signs of trouble and offer individualized recommendations to help prevent your eyes from tiring.

During exams, these eye doctors can give you recommendations on how to preserve your vision and minimize the risk of complications. It is recommended that you get eye exams at least once a year, especially if you have problems with your vision or health.
