Eye Care Tips for Office Workers

May 27, 2022

Asian woman worker feel tired and rubbing eyes

Staring at a computer screen for too long, peering over printed text for hours at a time, or working in an environment with bright or glaring lighting (or even low lighting)can all create eyestrain. This can happen especially if you don’t take breaks often enough, or if your workstation isn’t set up in a way that’s comfortable for your eyes.

Over the long term, chronic eyestrain can cause vision problems – such as nearsightedness or farsightedness – which warrants wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses. Let’s take a look at some eye care and vision care tips, and where you can go in Washington greater St. Louis to see an outstanding eye doctor who can help you keep your eyes healthy.

#1: Position Your Computer Screen So It Is at Eye Level or Slightly Below

Keeping your screen at or just slightly below eye level helps to prevent eyestrain. Also, keep your screen an arm’s length away from your eyes. This helps with reducing eye strain and eye fatigue.

#2: Make Sure There Is Adequate Lighting in the Room Where You Work

Too much light can cause glare on the screen, which can be hard on your eyes. Conversely, not enough ambient light can make it difficult for your eyes to focus on what you are working on. You do not want the screen to be super-bright as compared to the area surrounding your computer.

Adjusting the window blinds or adding an extra lamp in the room may help to achieve optimal lighting conditions for your workspace. Use an anti-glare screen on your office monitor to help reduce strain on your eyes.

#3: Take Frequent Breaks

It may seem excessive and even unnecessary, but in the long run, this works wonders for protecting your eyes and preventing strain and fatigue. Set an alarm on your phone or computer, and get up and walk around every 20 minutes or so – this gives your eyes a chance to rest throughout the day.

If you cannot get up, try focusing on an object that is far away every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds to help your eye muscles relax. Also, try to close your eyes for a minute or two every hour to relax the eye muscles.

#4: Have Regular Eye Exams

Regular checkups with an optometrist or ophthalmologist can help detect problems early on before they become worse. Vision problems need to be corrected as soon as possible, and eye doctors can recommend the best way for you to see better.
