Optometrist’s Tips for Healthy Eye Care Habits

Our vision is one of the most important components of general health. It is crucial to our perception of our surroundings. Any problem with our vision and normal functioning of the eye can interfere with our independence, mobility, and quality of life. So, it’s important to practice good eye care habits and hygiene.

Here, we’ll discuss some tips from our optometrist – a healthcare professional who performs eye exams and prescribes corrective lenses and glasses to address vision problems – that you can follow to give your eyes and vision the boost they need to stay healthy.

Tip #1 Limit Your Screen Time

According to studies, when we look at a screen, we tend to blink far less often. This causes the tear film or moisture layer on the front surface of the eyes to become dry. When this tear film is not smooth and clear (as it should be for clear vision) and is dry, you experience blurry vision.

This is why optometrists recommend limiting your screen time and taking short breaks. If your occupation requires you to continuously look at a screen, try the 20-20-20 rule. According to this rule, every 20 minutes, you should look at some object 20 feet away for about 20 seconds.

Tip #2 Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays

In addition to protecting your eyes from injury, it’s also important to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. Sun rays, such as UVA and UVB rays, can age all the structures of the eye.

UV exposure for a long period can also result in corneal damage, cataracts, and macular degeneration, which can ultimately lead to decreased vision.

So, when you go out, wear sunglasses that block out 99 to 100 % of harmful UV rays. Plus, choose sunglasses that cover as much of your eyes as possible.

Tip #3 Eat Eye-Healthy Food

Antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids are good for the eyes. These nutrients, along with some other essential minerals and vitamins, reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts that can lead to vision loss.

Leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, fatty fish, and eggs are rich in nutrients that are good for your eyes. So, our optometrist recommends you incorporate eye-healthy food into your diet!

Tip #4 Go for an Eye Exam Regularly

Optometrists recommend not waiting for eye symptoms to appear before you see an eye doctor. This is because by the time you experience symptoms, your problem could have become worse.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests making it a habit to get an eye exam annually. You can also consult your optometrist to get an eye exam recommendation depending on your lifestyle, age, eye health, and certain other risk factors.
